Pittsburgh Post Championship Medal  Colored Champions of Homestead Church League (1923)

This medal was presented by the Pittsburgh Post newspaper to each member of the team that won the Homestead Church League championship in 1923.

Homestead is an area of suburban Pittsburgh that was also the home of the Homestead Grays of the Negro National League. In the heyday of baseball, Pittsburgh had hundreds of semipro, professional and amateur teams that played in an estimated 50 leagues. The Homestead Church League was one of the top amateur leagues in the Pittsburgh area during the 1920’s. Amateur leagues like the Homestead Church League gave young ball players an opportunity to develop their skills and older ball players who didn’t or couldn’t go professional the opportunity to play competitive baseball on a regular basis.
