Bismarck Cubs vs Jamestown Red Sox Bismarck Air Show Broadside (1935)

This original broadside was used to promote the Bismarck Air Show which was held in Bismarck, North Dakota August 10-11, 1935. Featured as one of the top attractions of the Air Show was a baseball game between the Bismarck Cubs with Satchel Paige against the Jamestown Red Sox with Ray Starr. Bismarck and Jamestown were bitter rivals in baseball in the Dakotas. This game was the last game of the season for both teams.

Bismark - National Champions (1935)

The Bismarck Cubs or Giants as they were sometimes known were owned and operated by local businessman Neil Churchill. Baseball and especially winning baseball games was Churchill’s passion in life. To achieve his goals, Churchill recruited some of the best Negro League players of the day. This Bismarck team include Negro League stars: Satchel Paige, Hilton Smith, Barney Morris, Chet Brewer, Red Haley, Quincy Trouppe and Ted “Double Duty” Radcliffe. During the 1930’s, the Bismarck baseball club was the powerhouse of baseball in the Midwest. This Bismarck team also won the prestigious Wichita Baseball Tournament in 1935.

The Jamestown Red Sox were led by their star pitcher Ray Starr. The Jamestown Red Sox also recruited Negro League players. Some the Negro League players who played for Jamestown over the years were Barney Brown, Bill Perkins, Charlie Hancock, Sam Thompson and Walter “Steel Arm” Davis.

Both of these teams played a local season schedule, barnstorming schedule, Canadian tournaments and exhibition games against Major League all-star teams.
